论英语三元谓词工具论元的工具性层次差异及其句法影响
On the Instrumentality Gradation of the Argument of Instrument Activated by English Three-place Predicates and Its Syntactic Effect

摘要(Abstract):

英语三元谓词的工具义内部论元在语义特点上存在着工具性程度差异,具体可以区分出元工具、常规工具和弱化工具。元工具在句法投射上有明显的用作直接论元的倾向。常规工具用作直接论元和间接论元的情况均较多,但用作直接论元的制约条件更严格,而且两种论元的句法转换会造成意义上的差别。弱化工具一般只能用作间接论元。本研究对工具义论元的工具性程度差异的区分及解析,在一定程度上细化了Dowty的论元选择原则,对英语中的很多语言现象有较强的解释力。
The internal argument of instrument governed by the English three-place predicate is characterized by a gradation of being instrumental. Such a gradation can be depicted as metainstrument, conventional instrument and weakened instrument. The metainstrument, during the syntactic projection, has a great tendency to be the direct argument of the predicate. The conventional instrument can be, more often than not, used either as the direct or the indirect argument of the predicate, but there are strict requirements for this type of instrument to be the direct argument. In addition, the syntactic transformation between these two types of argument results in a difference in meaning. By contrast, the weakened instrument generally can only be used as the indirect argument of the predicate. The establishment of the gradation of the instrumentalness of the argument of instrument and its corresponding analysis has refined, to some extent, Dowty's argument selection principle, thereby providing strong explanatory power for many linguistic phenomena in English.
